Snapchat Starts Charging for Memories: Free Storage Limited to 5GB

Snapchat Starts Charging for Memories

Snapchat has officially announced a major change to its Memories feature. Starting now, free users are limited to 5GB of storage for saved snaps, and any content beyond this limit will require a paid subscription.

Why Snapchat is Charging for Memories

The move comes as part of Snapchat’s strategy to monetize its platform. Users who have accumulated years of saved snaps may now need to subscribe to keep their content safe.

“We want to provide users with flexibility and more options for their Memories,” said a Snapchat spokesperson.

Paid Storage Plans

Snapchat is offering multiple paid storage options:

  • 100GB Plan – $1.99/month

  • Snapchat+ Subscription – $3.99/month (includes 250GB storage)

  • Snapchat Platinum Subscription – $15.99/month (includes 5TB storage)

Free users will get 12 months of temporary storage for content exceeding 5GB. After that, older snaps may be deleted to make room for new ones.

How to Manage Your Snapchat Memories

To manage storage:

  1. Open the Memories section.

  2. Check the ‘Upgrade Storage’ banner or attempt to save a snap over the 5GB limit.

  3. Tap ‘Upgrade Storage’ to view plans and subscribe.

  4. Alternatively, download your Memories to your device to free up space.

User Reactions

The news has received mixed reactions. While some users understand the need for monetization, many are frustrated at having to pay to preserve their content. Long-time Snapchat users with large collections of saved snaps are particularly impacted.

Pro Tip: If you have a lot of memories stored, consider downloading important snaps now to avoid losing them.
